How do I find out about an old painting and the artist?

My friend bought an old painting but we can’t find out anything about the artist or the painting. We tryed but no one seems to know anything about it. How can we get information on this painting and artist?
Unless it’s a well known or historic artist, your best bet is to take the painting to a professional appraiser. Most honest appraisers will tell you if it’s not worth the price of appraisal. It’s the only difinitive way to know the true value of your painting.
