where does the name brown originate from?

Somehow, some ancestor became associated with the color brown–they may have lived in a brown house, had brown skin, brown hair, brown shirt, brown eyes–you can see how brown became one of the more common names. (It’s Braun in German.) It’s a good steady name, down-to-earth (pun intended). Also, after the civil war, many ex-slaves chose to name themselves after John Brown, the abolitionist.
